Krasnoyarsk Region
The Krasnoyarsk region is located in Central Siberia and occupies nearly 14% of Russia’s territory. Historically, the region was shaped by extractive industries and its role as a place of exile. For many years, its defining feature was electoral pluralism with a personalist character. The transition from the elite conflicts of the 1990s to a rigid federal power vertical was driven by broader systemic changes, a key milestone being the enlargement of the region in 2005–2007, after which local authorities largely lost influence over the distribution of natural resource rents. The political landscape is defined by a balance of interests among major corporations: Interros, Rusal, RusHydro and Rosneft. Since 2021, the regional branch of the Liberal Democratic Party — once among the strongest in the country — has faced systematic pressure, including the arrests of its key figures.
